Middle East welcomes rope for Saddam

Editor's note: Indian Marxists are up in arms protesting the death sentence to Saddam Hussain, the Butcher of Baghdad. But it is a must that you know how the Middle East media reacted to the event.
Read this editorial from Gulf News, the highly accliamed and widely read newspaper in Dubai and UAE.

Just action against an unjust tyrant
Gulf News
The trial of Saddam Hussain should not be considered an act of revenge
The trial of Saddam Hussain and his regime was a justifiable action against a tyrant who mistreated his nation and his neighbours for three decades and committed numerous crimes against them. It is a strong message for other dictators in the region and around the world.
The court hearing Al Dujail case found Saddam guilty and sentenced him to death. Although the case focused on crimes committed against the Shiite village of Al Dujail in 1982, Saddam's regime had however committed crimes against all segments of Iraqi society including the Kurds and Arab Sunni communities in different parts of the country.
The death sentence against Saddam is not final and under Iraqi law the verdict must be automatically sent to appeal in a higher court within 10 days, and the final ruling must be handed down within 20 days. The sentence will normally be carried out within 30 days of the appeal court's ruling.
The government must ensure the impartiality of the legal procedures against Saddam and the other defendants. The lower court proceedings and the fact that the judges were replaced twice casts doubt on the fairness of the trial.
Such issues should be resolved by the upper court if Iraqis are to be convinced that the trial proceedings were impartial.
The trial of Saddam should not be considered an act of revenge. It is an opportunity to end a violent chapter in the history of the country and to focus on the rebuilding of a sustainable democracy.
There is no doubt the unity of the nation is more important to Iraqis than the fate of its ousted dictator and those for or against the death sentence should not forget that Iraqis opted to build a democratic regime in which no one is immune from conviction against their bad deeds.
