Clippings: Calcutta mob damages World Cup

NEW DELHI, March 9, 2007
The International Cricket Council (ICC) onFriday said the trophy which was damaged while on display in India is not theone that will be awarded to the World Cup champions."The trophy that was ondisplay in India is not being shipped to the Caribbean," ICC spokesman BrianMurgatroyd told AFP."It is the original trophy that is usually on display inthe ICC's offices in Dubai.
The winners of this World Cup will get their ownversion of the trophy."The original was damaged in India when a gold ring belowthe coins depicting previous winners of the sport's biggest prize got detachedfrom the wooden base of the 11-kilogram (24-pound) trophy.
The damage wasdiscovered when the trophy, made in England at an estimated cost of 80,000dollars, was displayed by one of ICC's official sponsors in the eastern city ofKolkata on Thursday.A spokesman for the sponsors said the ring came off whenthe trophy was handed over by the ICC earlier this week.The winner of the WorldCup final in Bridgetown, Barbados on April 28 will be awarded a brand newreplica of the original.
